Dreams and their interpretations are MUCH older than Sigmund Freud!

During the 20th century the Western world seemed to have forgotten this, but in fact you will meet with dreams in the pages of both the Old and the New Testaments. A long, long time ago Joseph as a prisoer in Egypt said to the Egyptian Pharaoh, "Do not interpretations (of dreams) belong to God?" (Genesis 40:8)

Here then, we are presenting a Biblical rather than a worldly, view of dreams and their meanings.

In the Bible we find many dreams recorded.  In fact, at least two people, Daniel and Joseph, rose to very great power in the empires of Babylon and Egypt because of their God-given ability to interpret dreams.. We can read in the old testament that when joseph was in Egypt, the egyptian pharoah had a double-dream with the same meaning.....revealing that a great famine was going to happen in egypt(Genesis 41:1-7) . this illustrates a certain kind of dream containing the prediction of future events. joseph was able to recommend a certain course of action which prevented egypt from being destroyed by the famine when it came, which it did.

daniel was also given dreams of great significance (Daniel 7:1-28) which included the rise of the empires of medeo-persia, greece and rome which came to pass in history and which otherwise could not have been known. it should be noted that the last part of this dream has not yet concerns the rise and rule of a  ruthless dictator on a global scale, who will be worse than adolf hitler!

The babylonian emperor nebuchadnezzar was also given a dream, by god, which he forgot. by the anointing of god, daniel told him what the dream had been and the meaning of it! This is one of the most supernatural events in the bible. The meaning of the dream also concerned the rise of future kingdoms from another point of view (Daniel 2:1-45).and also comes down to the present day and has not yet been completely fulfilled.

in the new testament, important dreams continue to appear. the future husband of mary whose name was joseph, had a dream in god revealed to him that mary was pregnant by the spirit of god, and that he should not cancel their marriage. when jesus was an infant and the wise men visited him, god showed them in a dream that they should return to their own country by a way that was not known to king herod. when jesus was about to be crucified, the wife of pontius pilate said that she had a dream which revealed jesus' innocence. (Matthew 27:19)

Apart from the Bible, the  dreams of people on an ordinary basis, will usually be a scene of great confusion, often containing obscenity or filth, often violence. There will rarely be any unifying theme or sense of purpose. The reason is not hard to find, and Freud scratched the surface of it, but didn't go nearly far enough, The reason for the chaos of the dream-life is that humanity has a fallen nature from Original Sin, exactly as the Bible declares! Freud thought that peoples' problem was essentially sexual repression, but if you want to see what is actually in what we have come to call the unconscious mind, you need to read this list from the book of Galatians in the New Testament, verses 19-21:

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

This is quite an assortment! Even if you don't understand all of the words, you are sure to find your favorite sin in the list. What you are looking at is a real devil's brew, and is the basic reason why the world is the way it is. It is also the reason why nothing short of being Born-Again can change human nature. The problem is far, far greater than psychoanalysis or psychiatry has ever understood. The chaos of the dream-life actually represents the true nature of the world! I think that you can only see this after you become a Christian: this truth is too painful to be endured otherwise. Outwardly, the world is structured so that normal life, even with disasters, can be lived and humanity can go through its generations. However, this structure is essentially artificial, as Freud and subsequent schools of psycho-analysts perceived. This is why it often doesn't make any sense! Because we have to live we suppress, or repress, our intuitions about the world, and we try and go along with the mythology which attempts to portray the world as a rational place, and its doings as reasonable.

It takes many years of schooling and socialization to talk people into this. It is not an easy thing to do, since the evidence to the contrary is so very great. Invariably people come into agreement with the world because there doesn't appear to be any way out. HOWEVER THEIR DREAMS DO NOT GET SOCIALIZED AND CONTINUE TO REVEAL THAT THE WORLD DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!

WHY IS THIS SO? IT IS BECAUSE that when you receive salvation through JESUS CHRIST and become righteous in the sight of God, you receive a new nature which is not fallen and so you begin to live above the world, the sins of the flesh, and demons. I do not mean to infer that this produces an instant utopia................but any normal Christian will testify to you that their life before and after salvation, is similar to the contrast between darkness and light.

In my own case, specifically concerning dreams and the attempts to interpret them (which I have been involved in, on and off, for a long time) only after I became a Christian did my dreams begin to clear up, take on a sense of order and purpose, cease to be like a bad surrealistic film or a confused garbage dump; only after getting JESUS into my life did the nightmare essentially vanish from my sleeping hours.

the reason for this is that the christian has switched fuel tanks, as it were.............and the beauty, peace, goodness and love of the kingdom of god begins to percolate into their dreams!!

however, i want to make it clear that, neither here nor in any other place in this website, am i trying to present the christian life as a bed of roses. it is not. there are degrees of suffering involved.

It is not unusual for new Christians who are going through a fiery trial of afflictions, to have nightmares. This is because the devil is trying to terrify them and deprive them  of sleep and peace, in the hopes that they will get discouraged.  After my own salvation, I went through what would have been a very frightening period, because I had many nightmares. A number of times I had what I consider to be one of the worst kind of dreams.....that you think you are awake and go out into your living room, and find strangers standing there! However the Lord helped me because somehow, in the dream itself, I began to use the Name of Jesus to chase away the intruders and it worked! If it had not been for this supernatural help, I would not have been able to sleep in those times. Especially if you are a new Christian and are going through a period of bad dreams, you must call upon the Lord to show you how to use the Name of Jesus Christ against your enemies, in your dreams!
